Booking choice: The Imbros Gorge hike, from $34 per person. Check dates Tour details
Winter in western Crete means short days, bright cold mornings and storms that come through every week or two. The walking can be excellent. Most gorges outside the national park have no closing season, and the south coast is warm enough for a swim on a good day.
What changes is the rain. A gorge that is a dry stony bed in October can run with water a day after a storm. Every walk below is fine on a dry spell and a bad idea straight after heavy rain.
The quick answer
You can hike in Crete in winter: Imbros Gorge (about 8 km, 2 to 3 hours), Aradena Gorge to Marmara beach, the Diktamos Gorge near Chania and the coastal E4 path from Hora Sfakion to Loutro are all walkable on dry days. The Samaria Gorge itself is closed until at least 9 April 2027. Avoid any gorge for a day or two after heavy rain.
Can you hike in Crete in winter?
Yes. The Samaria Gorge is closed from 1 November 2026 until at least 9 April 2027, but most other gorges and the coastal paths stay open all year.
The difference is management. Samaria is a national park with gates, staff and a season. Gorges like Imbros and Aradena are open paths, so nobody closes them, and nobody checks them either. You decide on the day, and the weather of the last 48 hours is what you decide on.
Days are short in December and January, so start by mid-morning. The table compares the walks in this post.
| Walk | Length | Time | Winter note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imbros Gorge | About 8 km | 2 to 3 hours | Open all year; skip it after rain |
| Aradena Gorge to Marmara | About 7 km | 2.5 to 3 hours | Medium; the stream can rise after rain |
| Diktamos Gorge | About 7.5 km | About 3 hours | Green and shaded, close to Chania |
| Hora Sfakion to Loutro (E4) | About 6 km | About 2 hours | Coastal; one steep rocky stretch |
| Elafonisi to Kedrodasos (E4) | About 1.5 km | Under an hour | Easy coast walk; the full E4 stage to Paleochora is 18 km |
| White Mountains by 4x4 | Driven | 6.5 hours | No hike; up to a shepherd's hut at about 1,350 m |
Is the Imbros Gorge open in winter?
Yes. Imbros is not part of the national park and has no closing season, so you can walk it all year except during or after heavy rain or snow.
The path runs about 8 km downhill from Imbros village, at the south end of the Askyfou plain, at about 780 m, to Komitades near the coast. It takes 2 to 3 hours. The narrowest point is about 2 m wide. The surface is loose round stones from the dry stream bed, so wear shoes with ankle support.
The entrance fee is €5 in cash, paid at the top. Sort out your way back from Komitades before you start, by taxi or a pre-arranged lift, since almost nobody walks back up. The guided Imbros Gorge hike from Chania (from $31) handles both ends with a coach and adds free time in Hora Sfakion. Check the calendar for winter dates.

Aradena, from the village of Aradena down to Marmara beach, and Diktamos, a short drive east of Chania. Both are open paths, walkable in dry weather.
- Aradena Gorge (about 7 km, 2.5 to 3 hours): medium difficulty, from the iron bridge at Aradena, west of Hora Sfakion, down to Marmara beach. There is no road at the bottom: walk on to Loutro in about an hour or take a boat. In autumn and winter rain can make the stream rise without much warning.
- Diktamos Gorge (about 7.5 km, about 3 hours): from Katochori, 21 km east of Chania, down to Faragi near Stylos. Green and shaded with plane trees, with one spot that needs a short scramble.
- Kourtaliotiko Gorge, near Plakias: now run by NECCA and the local municipality with controlled access, a €5 ticket and a set season. Check its visitor platform before you go.

What coastal walks in Crete work in winter?
The E4 path along the Sfakia coast, from Hora Sfakion past Sweetwater beach to Loutro, and the easy stretch from Elafonisi to Kedrodasos in the far west.
Hora Sfakion to Loutro is about 6 km and 2 hours each way. The path passes Sweetwater beach, Glyka Nera in Greek, where fresh springs rise from the sea bed under the cliff. One section crosses a steep rocky slope, so take it slowly. Loutro has no road. The boats along this coast run a reduced timetable in winter and go daily again from April, so check ANENDYK's routes before you plan to walk one way only.
Elafonisi to Kedrodasos is about 1.5 km along the coast on the yellow and black E4 waymarks, to a beach named after its junipers. Walkers with a full day can carry on to Paleochora: 18 km, about 3.5 hours, mostly level.

Can you see the White Mountains in winter?
Yes, from the villages and the high tracks. Snow often covers the summits in winter, and a 4x4 day is the easy way up without a long hike.
The White Mountains 4x4 tour (from $106) drives through the villages of Meskla, Zourva and Therisso and up to a shepherd's hut, a mitato, at about 1,350 m, where Graviera cheese was made. Coffee and a Cretan lunch are included, and there is no gorge walk. The operator says schedules can change with group size and weather, and the tour needs four people to run.
Bring a jacket even on a sunny day: it is much colder at the top than on the coast. Amanda, in a 5-star review from Oct 2026, called it a "really different day spent climbing mountains off road".

Check the forecast for the last two days as well as today, start early, carry a jacket and water, and do not enter a gorge after heavy rain.
- Rain is the rule. A gorge can flood fast and rocks loosen after storms. Wait a day or two after heavy rain.
- Daylight. Plan to be out before mid-afternoon in December and January.
- Transport. Buses and boats run less often in winter. Arrange the ride back from the bottom before you start.
- Tell someone. Paths are quiet in winter. Leave your route with your hotel. The emergency number is 112.
- Footwear. Ankle support for stony gorge beds, and grip for wet rock on the coast.
