The full gorge from Chania, door to door

Platanos Tours' classic day: a coach from your Chania-area hotel up to Xyloskalo, the full walk down to the Libyan Sea and the boat and coach home. It is the most booked Samaria tour for a reason: the logistics of a one-way gorge are solved, and you still walk at your own speed.

Samaria Gorge Full-Day Trek from Chania

About this experience

This is the full crossing, not a short version. The coach takes about 100 minutes from the Chania coast to the Omalos plateau, stops for breakfast, and drops you at Xyloskalo, the north gate at 1,227 m. From there you walk downhill to the sea: 13 km inside the park and about 3 km more to the village of Agia Roumeli, roughly 16 km in all (the listing rounds it up to 17). Your English-speaking guide walks at the back of the group, so nobody is left behind and nobody is held back. Most people need 5 to 7 hours.

What you pay for here is the transport and the guide. The park entry ticket (€10) and the boat ticket (€15, €7.50 up to age 12) are paid on the day, and the guide hands out the boat tickets at a meeting point in Agia Roumeli. EU citizens under 18 and over 65 enter free; for other nationalities only children under 5 go free. After a swim and lunch in the village, the boat runs along the coast to Sougia, where the coach waits. The listing says "9 hours", but the coach gets back to the starting area at about 8:30 p.m., so plan on a long day from an early-morning pickup.

The pickup covers the coast from Kolymvari and Maleme through Platanias, Agia Marina, Stalos and Kalamaki to Chania town, Halepa and Almyrida. Give your hotel name when you book, and the operator e-mails the exact pickup point and time. Fitness matters: the walk is rocky and steep at the start, and the operator does not take children under 6, pregnant women or people with heart or back problems. The park is closed for the winter: NECCA's ticket site lists it as shut from 1 November 2026 until at least 9 April 2027, and next season's opening date has not been announced yet. In 2026 it opened late, on 19 May, after winter storm damage, and storms closed it again from 19 October.

How the day runs

  1. Early morningHotel pickup

The coach collects you at the point and time from the operator's e-mail. It is roughly 100 minutes up to the White Mountains.

  2. OmalosBreakfast and tickets

A stop on the plateau for breakfast (paid by you), then a short ride to the gate. Buy the €10 entry ticket here and keep it: it is checked again at the exit.

  3. Morning to afternoonDown the gorge

Wooden steps and switchbacks first, then the river bed, the abandoned village of Samaria about halfway, and the Iron Gates near the end. Springs along the path refill your bottle.

  4. AfternoonAgia Roumeli

From the park exit, walk the last stretch to the village or take the local minibus (guests report about €2). Swim, eat, and meet the guide for your boat ticket.

  5. 5:30 p.m.Boat to Sougia

About an hour along the cliffs of the south coast. The boat fills up, so queue early if you want a seat.

  6. EveningCoach home

About 100 minutes back over the mountains, arriving around 8:30 p.m.

What guests say

★★★★★

This trek is hard on your quads, knees and calves. It is 99% downhill on uneven rocky terrain [...] The guide will stay with the slowest of the tour group-my group's goal was not to see her again until the end. You then go at your own speed down towards the sea. We made it in just over 5 hours.

Swimming in the Libyan Sea is the reward! (Bring swimwear, a towel, and a hat, but especially something to wear on your feet on the hot small pebbles.) There are plenty of spring water points to refill your water bottle along the gorge, so there's no need to bring a lot of bottled water.

PLATANOS TOURS team are brilliant, they made sure I am on the same bus with my friend, as the pick was from different locations, thank you guys! Overall great experience, the bus, the boat, the hike, the gorge, and the sea view restaurant down the bottom where a gyros and a pint were a must

Tips before you book

  • Carry about €25 per adult in cash for the entry ticket and the boat, plus money for food. Budget it before you book, not on the coach.
  • Pack swimwear and water shoes: the beach at Agia Roumeli is hot pebbles, and you have time for a swim before the boat.
  • One full bottle is enough. The springs along the path are the way to refill, and there are no shops inside the park.
  • Book for next season once the park confirms its opening: Rain, heat waves, fire risk or storm damage can close the gorge at a day's notice, because the park decides the evening before. On those days operators have offered Imbros Gorge instead, or a refund, going by guests' reviews from autumn 2026.
  • Not sure about the distance? Our guide to how hard the gorge is breaks it down section by section.
