Booking choice: The Imbros Gorge hike, from $34 per person. Check dates Tour details
Most Cretan gorges run north to south, from a mountain plateau down to the Libyan Sea. That shapes the day: you usually walk downhill, and you usually need a plan for the bottom, whether that is a boat, a taxi or a bus from the coast.
We picked eight that are walkable without ropes, spread across the island, and noted the ones that have a ticket now. Samaria and Imbros first, because they are the two most people choose between.
The quick answer
For the big day, walk Samaria (16 km, 6 to 7 hours, in season only). For an easier gorge in the same area, Imbros (about 8 km, 3 hours). For quiet, Agia Irini down to Sougia. For drama with a beach at the end, Aradena to Marmara. From Rethymno, Kourtaliotiko and Preveli; in the east, Richtis and Zakros.
What are the best gorges to visit in Crete?
Samaria, Imbros, Aradena and Agia Irini in the west; Kourtaliotiko near Rethymno; Agiofarango in the south; Richtis and Zakros in the east.
The table is for walkers, not canyoners: each of these has a marked path or a dry bed you can follow on foot. Times are one way at a steady pace. Fees are the ones charged in 2026, where there is one.
| Gorge | Area | Walk | Time | Level | Ticket |

| Agia Irini | Agia Irini to near Sougia | About 7.5 km | About 3 h | Moderate | Small fee, cash |
| Kourtaliotiko | Between Spili and Plakias, Rethymno | Short walk to the waterfall | Under 1 h | Easy, steps | €5 |
| Agiofarango | South of the Messara, near Matala | About 2 km | 30 to 45 min | Easy | None |
| Richtis | Exo Mouliana, Lasithi | To the waterfall and back | About 1 h 40 min to the falls | Easy to moderate | None |
| Zakros | Ano Zakros to Kato Zakros, Lasithi | Up to 8 km | 1.5 to 3 h | Easy | None |
Is the Samaria Gorge still the best hike in Crete?
For most walkers, yes: nothing else on the island combines its length, height and walls. It is also the most restricted.
Samaria drops from Xyloskalo at 1,227 m to the sea at Agia Roumeli through a national park founded in 1962, now a UNESCO biosphere reserve and the home of the kri-kri goat. The full crossing is about 16 km and ends with the Iron Gates, where the walls stand about 3 to 4 m apart. You leave by boat.
The price of fame is rules. There is a season (closed now, until at least 9 April 2027 per NECCA), fixed entry hours, a €10 ticket and frequent weather closures. Plan it first and fit the other gorges around it. The details are in our season and opening times guide.

Easy to moderate: about 8 km downhill on a rocky dry bed, done in about 3 hours. It is the best gorge for a first try.
Imbros starts by the road in Imbros village, at the foot of the Askyfou plain, and ends at Komitades near Hora Sfakion. Its tightest point, Stenada, is about 1.6 m wide. The tour listings give the fee as €5 in cash, children up to 12 free, and NECCA now runs the ticketing.
It is also the gorge that runs when Samaria cannot, so it fills up on Samaria's closure days. We compare the two in detail in Samaria or Imbros.

Explore the Imbros Gorge hike Tour detailsWhat is the Aradena Gorge like?
Wild and quieter than Imbros: about 7 km from Aradena village down to Marmara beach, with one short iron ladder.
You start beside the abandoned village of Aradena, above Anopolis, next to the iron bridge that crosses the gorge. Bungee jumpers use it: the drop is 138 m, the highest bungee bridge in Greece. An old stone path drops into the bed from near the bridge. Early on there is a vertical step of about 9 m with a fixed iron ladder; the rest is boulders and scree, mostly dry.
The prize is Marmara, a pebble cove with caves and clear water. From there small boats run to Loutro, and from Loutro to Hora Sfakion; or walk the coast path to Loutro in about an hour. Check the boat times before you start, as they are fewer outside summer.

Is Agia Irini Gorge a good alternative to Samaria?
Yes, if you want a quieter, shorter gorge in the same mountains: about 7.5 km in about 3 hours, ending near Sougia.
Agia Irini starts by the village of the same name, on the road from Chania to Sougia, and runs south through pine and plane forest along a mostly dry stream bed. It is not easy: boulders and stony ground for long stretches. It is also much less crowded than Samaria, and it can be walked over a longer season.
The path comes out a few kilometres above Sougia, a small resort on the south coast with a pebble beach. A small fee is charged at the entrance, so carry cash. Sougia is also one of the two ports the Samaria boats serve, which is why some walkers combine the two areas on a longer stay.

Between Spili and Plakias, south of Rethymno. Since 16 May 2026 it has a €5 entry ticket.
Kourtaliotiko is a road gorge: the route from Rethymno to Plakias and Preveli runs right through it. From a parking area by the road, steps lead down to the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos and a waterfall of about 40 m. Most people stay under an hour. The river then runs on to the palm grove at Preveli beach, and fit walkers can follow it down in about 2.5 hours.
The €5 ticket is new for 2026. NECCA and the Municipality of Agios Vasileios introduced it together when the site opened on 16 May, to pay for paths and visitor facilities. It makes a good half day from Rethymno with Preveli, or a stop on the drive to the south coast.

What are the best gorges in central and eastern Crete?
Agiofarango for a short walk to a beach, Richtis for a waterfall, and Zakros for the Valley of the Dead and a Minoan palace.
- Agiofarango (south Heraklion, near Matala): about 2 km down a flat gorge past small chapels to a pebble beach. 30 to 45 minutes, easy, good with children.
- Richtis (near Exo Mouliana, Sitia): a shaded walk along a stream, under an old Venetian bridge and down wooden stairs to a high waterfall. About 1 hour 40 minutes to the falls, back the same way. The Sitia geopark advises not to go in after 5 p.m. in summer or 3 p.m. in spring and autumn.
- Zakros (the Valley of the Dead): from Ano Zakros down to Kato Zakros, past cave tombs the Minoans used, to the remains of a Minoan palace by the sea. About 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on where you start.
From Heraklion, these are easier to reach than the Sfakia gorges. If Samaria is the goal anyway, the Samaria trip from Heraklion handles the long drive.

The easy way from Agia Roumeli to the Iron Gates, Imbros, a short visit from either end of Samaria, or a day above the gorge in the White Mountains.
- Samaria the easy way. Boat to Agia Roumeli, walk about 2 km up to the Iron Gates and back, swim. This tour does it from the Chania area; entry and boat are paid on the day.
- Imbros. Half of Samaria's distance and effort, with narrower walls.
- A short Samaria visit. After 1 p.m. the park allows walks of 2 km in from either end and back: from Xyloskalo until 3 p.m., or from Agia Roumeli until 4 p.m. The €10 ticket is the same.
- Kourtaliotiko or Agiofarango. Under an hour, steps or a flat path, done before lunch.
- No walk at all. The White Mountains 4x4 tour drives up through the villages to a shepherd's hut at about 1,350 m, with lunch. It runs outside the Samaria season too.
For the walk itself, how hard Samaria is helps you decide whether the full crossing is for you.
