Booking choice: The Samaria hike with a hiking guide, from $35 per person. Check dates Tour details
People often hear that the Samaria Gorge is "all downhill" and picture an easy stroll. Downhill is the problem. You start at Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau at 1,227 m and finish on the beach at Agia Roumeli, and most of that height goes in the first few kilometres. After that comes a long, stony riverbed where every step needs your attention.
The park's own description is fair: not an easy walk, but not only for experienced hikers. Thousands of ordinary walkers do it every summer. What follows is how long it really takes, which parts hurt, who should pick a shorter option, and what helps on the day. The park is closed for the winter now, so treat this as planning for next season.
The quick answer
The Samaria Gorge is a moderate to hard day hike: about 16 km from Xyloskalo (1,227 m) down to the sea at Agia Roumeli, on rocky, uneven ground, taking most people 6 to 7 hours with stops. It needs no climbing skills, but you need decent fitness, healthy knees and proper shoes. On GetYourGuide the guided hike from Chania starts from $35.
How difficult is the Samaria Gorge hike?
Moderate to hard. There is no scrambling and no exposure, but the length, the steady descent and the rough ground make it a demanding day for anyone who does not walk much.
Think of it as three walks stitched together. First a steep drop through pine forest on stepped paths with wooden rails. Then a long middle section along the riverbed, where the path keeps switching between gravel, slabs and stepping stones. Last, the narrows around the Iron Gates and a flatter, hotter walk out to the coast.
Reviewers on the most booked tour say the same thing in different words: harder than they expected, and worth it. The legs feel it for days. Your lungs barely notice, since there is almost no climbing on the classic route.
★★★★★This trek is hard on your quads, knees and calves. It is 99% downhill on uneven rocky terrain [...] For reference, I am 52yo, short, of moderate physical condition and hate hiking in general. [...] We made it in just over 5 hours.

How long is the walk through the Samaria Gorge?
About 16 km: 13 km on the main path inside the national park, then about 3 km from the southern entrance to the village of Agia Roumeli.
Tour listings round it to 16, 17 or even 18 km, and phone trackers often show more because you weave around rocks. The last 3 km are the dullest part: open, often hot, on a wide track. A small private minibus waits at the park exit for anyone who wants to skip them, and several hikers mention paying a couple of euros for it.
The route only goes one way on foot for a day trip. There is no road at the bottom, so everyone leaves Agia Roumeli by boat. That is why the walking time and the boat time are linked.
| Point on the route | Where it is | What you find |
|---|---|---|
| Xyloskalo (1,227 m) | Start, on the Omalos plateau | Ticket office, information centre, the steep wooden-railed descent |
| Neroutsiko rest area | About 2 km in | Turn-back point for short visits from the top |
| Samaria village | About halfway | Abandoned stone houses, rest area, toilets, water |
| Iron Gates (Portes) | About 1.5 to 2 km before the southern entrance | The narrows: walls about 300 m high, about 3 to 4 m apart |
| Southern entrance | 13 km from Xyloskalo | Ticket check on the way out; a small private minibus runs on to the village |
| Agia Roumeli | About 3 km further, at sea level | Beach, tavernas, shops and the boat |
How long does a Samaria Gorge walk take?
Most people need 6 to 7 hours with stops, according to the park. Fast walkers finish in about 5 hours, slower groups closer to 8.
ANENDYK, the boat company, gives a range of 5 to 8 hours for the descent. Guided tours plan for about 4.5 to 6 hours of walking and then free time in Agia Roumeli for a swim and a late lunch.
The clock has hard edges. To do the full crossing you must enter between 7:00 and 13:00, and everyone must be out of the park by 18:00. The boats leave Agia Roumeli at 17:30. A slow walker who starts late has little margin, which is the main argument for an organised tour with an early coach.
- Fast: about 4.5 to 5 hours, few stops.
- Average: 6 to 7 hours with a lunch stop at Samaria village.
- Slow or sore knees: 7 to 8 hours. Start at the first coach or bus of the day.
A guide walks at the back of the group, so nobody is left alone on the trail.
Check dates for the Samaria hike with a hiking guideIs Samaria Gorge a hard hike on the knees?
Yes, this is the hardest part for most people. The first 2 km or so drop steeply on stepped paths, and the rest of the day is a slow descent over loose stones.
The name Xyloskalo means "wooden ladder", after the old stepped path at the top. Today it is a zigzag of steps and rails through the forest, and you lose height fast. Walk it slowly: this is where tired legs later in the day come from.
The middle section is gentler in gradient but rougher underfoot. Rocks are polished by thousands of boots and can be slippery even when dry. Stream crossings use stepping stones and small wooden bridges. In high summer the open stretches near the end get hot, though much of the upper gorge is shaded by pine and cypress.
★★★★★The descent is long and tiring. Good, sturdy shoes are essential. Never let your guard down, because the rocks are slippery even in dry weather [...] several people, including my husband, fell.

Who should not hike the Samaria Gorge?
Anyone with knee, hip, back or heart problems, pregnant women and people with limited mobility. The park sets no age limit but does not recommend the walk for small children.
Tour operators draw the line in their own listings. The Platanos Tours treks are not recommended for children under 6, the private transfer says not under 14, and several tours list people with heart or back problems and pregnant women as not suitable. The guided hike asks for good fitness and lists a low level of fitness as not suitable.
For children the honest test is simple: can they walk five or six hours on rough ground and still enjoy it? Many keen 10 to 12 year olds can. If you are unsure, the easy way from Agia Roumeli gives them the Iron Gates without the long descent, and Imbros Gorge is a shorter full crossing.
- Good fit: regular walkers, hikers, fit teenagers.
- Think twice: first-time hikers on a hot day, anyone with weak ankles.
- Pick another option: bad knees, heart problems, pregnancy, small children.
What should you wear and bring for the Samaria Gorge?
Hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes, trekking poles, a hat, sun cream, snacks and an empty water bottle. Bring swimwear for Agia Roumeli and cash in euros for the tickets.
Shoes are the big one. Every tour bans sandals and flip-flops, and reviewers repeat it endlessly. Poles take a lot of strain off the knees on the way down; the hiking guide tour rents them from the guide, subject to availability, and the private transfer includes them.
There are no shops inside the park, so carry food. Water is the easy part: springs along the path let you refill, so a litre bottle is enough. Since 2026 the park also hands out free helmets at both entrances. Wearing one is optional and strongly recommended, because of rockfall risk in the narrows.
- Must have: grippy shoes, hat, sun cream, bottle, snacks, cash.
- Very useful: poles, blister plasters, a light layer for the cool start at 1,227 m.
- For the end: swimwear, a towel, something for hot pebbles.
★★★★★There are plenty of spring water points to refill your water bottle along the gorge, so there's no need to bring a lot of bottled water.

Explore the Samaria hike with a hiking guide Tour detailsIs the Samaria Gorge safe?
For a careful walker, yes. Park staff with radios work along the route, medical and nursing staff were on duty from the first day of the 2026 season, and the gorge closes when weather makes it risky.
The main risks are falls on loose rock, heat and, after rain, rockfall and high water. The park manages them in a few ways. Staff along the path stay in radio contact with Xyloskalo, Samaria village and Agia Roumeli. Your entry ticket is checked again at the exit so rangers know how many people are still inside. A nowcasting app, in its second year in 2026, warns of severe weather up to two hours ahead at critical points. Emergency number: 112.
When the forecast is bad, the gorge closes, usually decided the day before. Visitors also accept personal responsibility for their own safety when they enter. The 2026 season showed how often weather decides things: a late opening on 19 May after winter damage, then closures from 19 October. Opening times and the season covers it in detail.

Check dates for the Samaria trek from ChaniaIs there an easier way to see the Samaria Gorge?
Yes. The easy way goes by boat to Agia Roumeli and walks about 2 km up to the Iron Gates and back. Imbros Gorge, near Hora Sfakion, is a shorter full crossing of about 7 to 8 km.
The easy way is a different day, not a shortcut to the same one. You see the narrowest and most dramatic part, but not the forest, the steep top or Samaria village. Walking up from the sea is mostly a gentle uphill on the way in, and ANENDYK puts it at about an hour each way. You still need a park ticket at the full price.
Samaria the easy way (4.4 from 40 reviews) handles the coach and the boat timing. The Imbros Gorge hike (4.7 from 227 reviews) suits families and anyone who wants a real gorge walk in 2 to 3 hours. Walking the whole gorge uphill from Agia Roumeli is possible but much harder than going down.
| Option | Walking | Time on foot | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full crossing with a hiking guide | About 16 km downhill | 6 to 7 hours | $35 |
| Samaria the easy way | About 2 km each way from the bottom | About an hour each way | $31 |
| Imbros Gorge hike | About 7 to 8 km downhill | 2 to 3 hours | $34 |
