The full crossing with a hiking guide

TourMaster's full Samaria day from Chania, led by a professional hiking guide and a local hiking expert who carry VHF radios. Pick it if you want more support on the trail than a standard escort, at the lowest price for the full crossing.

Samaria Gorge with a Professional Hiking Guide

About this experience

The walk is the same full crossing as every classic tour: Xyloskalo at 1,227 m down to Agia Roumeli on the sea, about 16 km. The difference is the support. Before you start, an English-speaking hiking guide gives a safety briefing, explains the route, the timing and the meeting points, and a local hiking expert walks with the group. The guides carry VHF radios, which matters in a gorge where phone signal comes and goes. Walking poles can be rented from the guide before the start, while they last, and the listing points out that a doctor is stationed at Samaria village.

The entry ticket (€10) and the ferry from Agia Roumeli (€15) are not in the price. You buy both at the first stop, the morning breakfast and coffee break on the way up, so there is no queue at the gate. Bring cash for the ferry. Pickup is from meeting points across the Chania area (the listing has over 100), and the day is long: the listing gives 14 hours, with about 1.5 hours on the coach each way, 6 hours for the hike, 2.5 hours in Agia Roumeli and the ferry along the south coast to the coach.

TourMaster asks for good fitness and does not take people over 80, pregnant women, or anyone with heart problems, altitude sickness or low fitness. Sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. The park is closed for the winter: NECCA's ticket site lists it as shut from 1 November 2026 until at least 9 April 2027, and next season's opening date has not been announced yet. In 2026 it opened late, on 19 May, after winter storm damage, and storms closed it again from 19 October. Rain, heat waves, fire risk or storm damage can close the gorge at a day's notice, because the park decides the evening before. On those days operators have offered Imbros Gorge instead, or a refund, going by guests' reviews from autumn 2026.

What guests say

★★★★★

Our guide was the best! He was calm, cheerful, empathetic, and gave clear instructions. I slipped on a slippery rock and hurt my wrist, and he was immediately there with an ice pack. [...] I have asthma and was a bit apprehensive about the hike, but by taking it at a leisurely pace, it went perfectly. [...] Hiking boots and poles are a great help on the many slippery and uneven stretches, and your knees will thank you profusely.

My highlight of Crete! Although it is very busy, people spread out eventually by mid walk. Bring cash for ferry ticket. Coach journey was smooth, really appreciated the stop half way with plentiful food and drink.

While we were unable to go to Samaria, the guides worked together to have half of us go to alternative hike and the other half return to Chania for refund. Imbrios was an easier hike but still lovely and the village at the end was so cute.

Tips before you book

  • Bring €25 per adult in cash for the two tickets. Guests advise cash for the ferry in particular.
  • Pack your own breakfast and snacks. Guests say the morning stop gets crowded and is not cheap.
  • Rent the poles. The rocks are slippery even when dry, and the first 2 km drop hard.
  • Eat in Agia Roumeli. The coach gets back late enough to miss dinner at many hotels.
  • Plan for next season with the closure rules in mind: our season and opening-times guide explains how the dates are set.

What is the difference between this tour and the classic one?

The walk is the same 16 km. This one adds a professional hiking guide and a local expert, a safety briefing before the start, VHF radios and poles to rent. Pickup is from meeting points rather than your hotel.

How long is the day?

The listing says 14 hours: about 1.5 hours on the coach each way, around 6 hours for the hike, 2.5 hours in Agia Roumeli and the ferry along the coast.

What happens if the gorge is closed on my date?

The park can close at a day's notice for weather. Guests on a closed day in autumn 2026 were offered Imbros Gorge or a refund, and the booking can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.
